Vowel Epenthesis in Consonant Clusters by Japanese Speakers

(in English) Vowel epenthesis in non-native consonant clusters by native Japanese speakers was investigated from productive point of view. Reading experiment (subjects read English words and non-words) revealed that native Japanese speakers do not always insert vowel in English consonant clusters, especially when consonants are voiceless ones. Also, when inserted, duration of epenthetic vowel is significantly shorter than that of vowels in words presented in katakana form. The same is true for vowel paragoge in word final consonants. These results suggest that vowel epenthesis by Japanese is not due to the perception of “illusory vowels” in consonant clusters as Dupoux et al. claimed, but to the difficulty of the articulation of the clusters.
