Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, there have been many user interfaces proposed that use an optical device such as a camera to detect a user's body motion and use it as a gesture input device. Such devices have the advantage that they place few restrictions on the user and offer intuitive operation using a user's hands, but previous devices tend to have reduced accuracy in certain lighting environments and do not detect a user's hand's 3D position. In this paper, we propose an input device using an omni-directional optical sensor to resolve these problems. A user grabs the optical sensor which captures a 360° image around it, capturing a user's hand movement without being dependent on a user's hand shape or grip. In addition, by including high-luminance LEDs to illuminate the user's nearby hand, the device can be operated on reliably in any environment. Also, the distance from the user's finger to the camera can be estimated in relation to the brightness of the user's finger's
image. A prototype system was constructed for use in an evaluation experiment, where it was confirmed that the proposed interface can be
used as a highly flexible interface usable with multiple fingers and in any environment.
