This paper describes a near-lossless video coding scheme based on motion compensation and block-adaptive 3D prediction. In this scheme, multiple linear predictors are optimized frame-by-frame, and an appropriate one
is adaptively selected in each block according to local properties of a video signal. The predictor has a 3D structure which contains three kinds of reference pels taken from the current and motion-compensated past two frames to exploit both temporal and spatial correlations. Moreover, a method of multi-frame MC which switches one of the
motion-compensated frames block-by-block is employed to improve accuracy of the prediction. In order to keep magnitude of reconstruction errors within a given limit of d, prediction errors obtained by the above prediction are quantized with a step-size of 2d+1 and then encoded using a context-adaptive arithmetic coder. Simulation results indicate that coding rates of the proposed scheme are 32–69% lower than those of the JPEG-LS-based near-lossless coding scheme. |
