[Tutorial Lecture] Ultrasound Imaging of Tissue Viscoelasticity and its Clinical Application

(in English) The techniques for tissue elasticity imaging have been investigated as a new modality for cancer diagnosis based on characteristics of tissues since many disease tissues such as breast and prostate cancer become hard with disease progress. Advantages of ultrasonic examination, such as real-time and simple (freehand) operation, must be preserved in the elasticity imaging system. To satisfy these conditions, we developed the combined autocorrelation method (CAM).
We recently developed a commercial ultrasound scanner, for real-time tissue elasticity imaging by implementing our proposed algorithm. Results of clinical evaluation of the system demonstrated that the real-time tissue elasticity imaging equipment enabled us to diagnose cancerous tumor of breast, thyroid, prostate, skin and other organs with high precision based on simpler criteria compared with conventional ultrasonogram. Here we would like to refer to the development of the system and some of our clinical experiences by using the developed system.
