Traffic control scheme based on congestion prediction in IP/LEO Satellite Network

(in English) Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks have low transmission power consumption and short propagation delays. Their terrestrial terminals can be reduced in size and handheld easily. For these reasons, LEO satellite networks are suitable for building mobile networks. LEO satellite networks have world-wide coverage, but network user density is not uniform distributed due to the geography and population. Traffic loads may concentrate on certain satellite and congestions occur. Therefore, traffic loads on satellites which cover areas of high user density need to be distributed. The position of a LEO satellite can be calculated from its orbit, and load condition of the area where it is going to cover can be predicted by exchanging message about traffic load among adjacent satellites. In this paper, we propose a traffic control scheme which balances traffic loads using congestion prediction and reduces packet drops caused by uneven traffic distribution. We also evaluate the performance of the proposed method by simulations.
