Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, with the emergence of a wide variety of access technologies, dual/multi-mode terminals, which have several network interfaces (I/Fs), have been introduced. There have also been some proposals for network architectures where several access technologies are tightly coupled to provide communication services for such dual/multi-mode terminals. In this paper, the authors propose a new mobile converged architecture where an IP-based Wireless LAN (WLAN) network is integrated into an existing circuit switch-based cellular network. The proposed architecture provides a voice service to users via the existing circuit switch network and by IP-based WLAN controlled by Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). In the proposed architecture, a new type of interworking equipment, called a Base Station Controller Gateway (BSC-GW), is introduced to convert the existing cellular signaling into SIP signaling and vice-versa. The BSC-GW is directly connected to the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and interworks the voice service over the IP-based WLAN with the voice service over the circuit switched cellular core network. The authors also introduce the procedures of registration, call origination/ termination at the WLAN area and handover between CS cellular and WLAN networks. The authors especially focus on incoming call processing to a user who connects with WLAN as well as the handover from a cellular network to a WLAN network.
