Magnetic drive by a small magnet of break arc occurring between electrical contacts in a DC42V/7-21A circuit

(in English) Break arcs are generated between pure silver electrical contacts in a DC42V resistive circuit. The contacts are separated at constant speed. The break arcs are driven by the external magnetic field of a permanent magnet. The duration of the break arc is investigated. Characteristics of motion of the break arc are observed with a high-speed camera. As results, the arc duration is shortened by the effect of the external magnetic field. It is shown that the minimum strength of the external magnetic field to shorten the arc duration is determined by the Lorentz force which acts to the entire region of the break arc.
