Binaural Hearing Aid System Combining SIMO-Model-Based ICA and HRTF-Free Binary Masking

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In our daily life, we can hear not only the target sounds but also various sounds.
Because of these undesired sounds, it is probably difficult to listen
to the companion's speech.
In the noisy environment, it is a good solution for the communication that
a system suppresses the noises and enhances the target sounds.
To realize that system, we have proposed a binaural hearing-aid system
based on two-stage blind sound source separation (BSS) method.
This system consists of two techniques; a single-input multiple-output
(SIMO)-model-based independent component analysis and
binaural-output-capable SIMO-model-based binary masking (SIMO-BM).
However owing to user-specific head-related transfer function (HRTF)
for receiving the sounds and adopting SIMO-BMs in the 2nd stage, the
previous system has directivity dependency for sound sources' layout.
In this paper, we propose a new BSS method which mitigates
user-native HRTF and keep the separation performance at a high level.
The experimental results reveal that the separation performance can be
improved by using the proposed method in case of sound sources are
located lopsidedly in a realistic reverberant condition.
