For the increase of the ratio of mission equipment at the spacecraft, a small-size and lightweight BUS system (electrical power subsystem, thermal control subsystem, attitude control subsystem, etc.) is demanded. Components of the electrical power subsystem (Li-Ion battery, power control unit, solar panel, etc.) are developed for the reduction in size and weight. Since Li-Ion battery have high-energy density (twice that of conventional alkaline batteries such as Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Ni-H2), it is expected Li-Ion battery will effect the smaller and lighter electrical power subsystem the most. But Li-Ion battery is poor at the over-charge and over-discharge. So we must consider about the safety when we use them and we need the development of the protection circuit in the parallel to the development of the Li-ion battery.
In this paper we describe the effectiveness of the balance circuit with the battery lifetime tests and software-controlled battery management system. |
