[Invited Talk] On the schemes for recognition of approaching vehicles through acoustic sensing

(in English) We have been in research for preventing vehicles from collisions at the intersections, and developed a scheme for detecting the sound from tires of a vehicle to recognize an approaching vehicle. The detection time may be affected, however, by the sound the ambient noises and the sound from the measuring vehicle of its own. This paper describes recognition schemes in which the effect of the sound from the engine and cooling fans as well as other ambient noises is to be reduced by means of the spectral subtraction technique with multiple pair of microphones. The effectiveness of the described schemes through field trials is also mentioned.
