The point lamps using LEDs and the linear lamps of cold/hot cathode fluorescent lamps have been used for back lighting of LCDs and general lighting . However, the LEDs do not emit uniform light, have difficulty of getting the same color, and cost so high. They have excessive luminance and are not suitable for high quality general lighting. Also, in addition to environment prolusion by mercury, because the luminance of conventional fluorescent lamps has been excessive gradually to get high efficiency, it is difficult to apply them to high quality general lighting. Uniform luminance, and high luminous efficacy white color flat field emission lamps (FELs) have been proposed and developed by the insight of high quality general lighting, by the usage of newly developed high luminance green and blue color phosphor and nano carbon field emitters, to realize high quality general lighting and backlighting, to avoid environmental pollution of mercury, and to save energy consumption in lighting. The flat FELs have demonstrated the luminance of 15,000 cd/m2, at 6KV of acceleration voltage. The flat FELs are expected as the first mercury-free fluorescent lamps to practical use in general lighting as well as backlighting. |
