In the current Internet, the amount of P2P overlay traffic flowing between ISP's keeps increasing, which has a great impact on the cost of peering between the ISP's. It is often the case with P2P overlay applications that a multitude of users access the same content nearly at the same time, thus, similar packets repeatedly flow across the ISPs.
We can reduce the size of packets through compressing the payload of them, and further reduce the number of packets by combining and later decomposing compressed packets.
In addition, by caching the compressed data, we can dramatically decrease
the traffic between ISPs.
This paper proposes an network layer caching architecture that improves the packet delivery for overlay P2P applications.
It shows that our proposed method can reduce the size of the packet to only 30% of the original size and greatly decrease the traffic between ISPs. |
