In the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC protocol, the four-way handshake mechanism based on the exchange of request to send (RTS) and clear to send (CTS) messages resolves the hidden terminal problem in a single-hop wireless network, which results in increasing the overall throughput. However, in IEEE 802.11-based multihop wireless local area networks (LANs), the RTS/CTS-based access mechanism and half-duplex transmission of a wireless link cause unfairness in the end-to-end throughput with regard to the number of transmission hops. Most of the previous studies related to this problem are based on simulation, and there is little work taking into account the flow-level behavior resulting from the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. In this paper, we analyze the end-to-end throughput for a backhaul-type wireless mesh network using a continuous-time Markov chain. Focusing on the three-node chain topology, we model it as a tandem queueing network with two nodes, deriving the end-to-end throughput. We validate the analysis with ns-2 simulation. Numerical results show that the analytical results agree fairly well with simulation results, and that the throughput of a one-hop flow is hardly affected by the offered load of a two-hop flow. |
