An issue of sensor networks is that there are bottleneck nodes, which relay more data than others. In general, the bottleneck nodes are located near the sink in sensor networks. Multiple sinks are introduced to balance the traffic load to bottleneck nodes. However, bottleneck nodes are not always near the sink when sensor node distribution is not uniform. In such a situation, the conventional approach using multiple sinks depletes the batteries of bottleneck nodes earlier than those of nodes near the sink. As a result, the network lifetime is shortened. In this paper, we propose a load balancing method for asymmetric topology where node distribution is not-uniform, called DCAM (DispersiveCast of Packets to Avoid bottleneck nodes in using Multiple sinks). In the DCAM, the sink finds bottleneck nodes, and each node sends its sensing data to multiple sinks so that the load on the bottleneck nodes can be balanced. We evaluate DCAM using computer simulations and show that DCAM prolongs the network lifetime by about 1.62 times compared with the conventional scheme. |
