For traditional distributed routing control in large-scale IP networks, there are several problems such as increase of route convergence time and complicated router configuration. In addition, the control-plane processing part (CE: control element) and the forwarding-plane processing part (FE: forwarding element) of the router are physically integrated into one chassis. This interferes with flexibly deploying new network services to large-scale IP networks at a low cost because the CEs of all routers composing the networks must have new functions added and performance. Therefore, we have proposed a functionally distributed network architecture that separates the CE from the FE of the router. In this architecture, the CE is mounted on a general-purpose server platform, and one path-control process in the CE consolidates and processes the path computations and the path settings for two or more FEs. As the number of CEs in the networks is decreased dramatically, the routing control is stabilized, and the functions and performance of the CEs are easily upgraded. In this paper, we show a delay evaluation of ForCES communication using the prototype architecture in a case where the ForCES protocol proposed in IETF is applied to the communication mechanism between CE and FE. |
