Alkali-metal atom emission and continuum emission in sonoluminescence
Pak-Kon Choi, Shogo Abe (Meiji Univ.) US2008-60
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Sonoluminescence spectrum from alkali-metal aqueous solutions consists of continuum emission and line emission from alkali-metal atoms. The line emission is observed in multi-bubble sonoluminescence and not in single-bubble sonoluminescence. We performed spatio-temporal decomposition of the two kinds of emission to investigate origin of the emissions. Images of MBSL at 138 kHz from NaCl solution taken by a digital camera were analyzed to obtain red and blue components. The red component is corresponding to Na-atom emission (Na D lines), and the blue one to the continuum emission. The range of the Na-atom emission in the images extended wider than that of the continuum emission. Optical pulses of sonoluminescence spectrally divided using a dichroic mirror were detected with a high-sampling rate oscilloscope. Timing distributions of the pulses from both emissions were compared and the distribution from the Na-atom emission was broader than that from the continuum. The results indicate the following conclusion. The Na-atom emission is come from those bubbles which have a wider radius distribution and lower collapse temperature. The continuum emission is arisen from those bubbles which have a narrower radius distribution and higher collapse temperature.
