Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The mechanical distortion of neural tissue caused by the implant of neuronal electrodes is an important factor affecting the performance of neuronal spike recording in the brain because the mechanical distortion could kill or inactivate the neurons. In this study, we propose a method to obtain the information about the mechanical distortion near the electrode based on the extracellular potential waveforms recorded by the multiple-site electrode. First, the three-dimensional position of each neuron is estimated making use of the spatial profile of action potential. Second, the shift of the neuron in the neural tissue with a movement of the electrode is estimated to visualize the effect of mechanical strain induced by the electrode. Our method will provide useful information for the assessment of the implant of neural electrode in the brain.
