Discrete time receivers are an attractive solution for use in Software De-fined Radio (SDR). A discrete time receiver samples received signals at the RF rate and converts signals to baseband directly. This has various advantages such as no imaging effects, any intermediate filter, and so on. Direct Sampling Mixer (DSM) is key for a discrete time receiver which achieves sampling, filtering and decimation with charge sharing between each capacitor. Since charge sharing works as a digital filter, we can obtain desired frequency characteristics for adapting different communication systems. However, DSM has a nonlinearity problem remains to be solved. Generally, the nonlinearity in a receiver has never been a subject of discussions because the received signal is too weak to saturate an amplifier. In this paper, we present the design guidelines by analytical calculation for MOS switches in a direct sampling mixer for low distortion operation. |
