Social anxiety modulates the degree of the M170 responce to emotional faces

(in English) According to traditional face processing model, early component of face processing is thought to reflect only structural encoding, but not emotional processing. Recently, some neuroimaging studies show that early response to faces at occipital area is modulated by emotional content of stimuli and is linked to other emotional areas. Using MEG, we compared responses peaking around 170ms after stimulus onset at occipital area (M170) evoked by neutral faces to fearful faces in high social anxiety subjects and low social anxiety subjects. Results showed that grand averaged strength of M170 to fearful faces in high social anxiety subjects was stronger than one to neutral face, but this emotional effect was not observed in low anxious subjects. Our findings suggest that emotional information of face might be processed at early stage and modulated by social anxiety of subjects.
