Increases in the data transmission rate intra-chip and between chips have been kept under the increase in processor performance. This retardation is a critical factor, which impedes the designing of higher performance electronic systems. Optical interconnection is expected to provide much larger bandwidth density for buses and networks than electrical interconnection. In this paper, recent state-of-the-art silicon photonics technologies for optical interconnect including key component technologies such as modulators, detectors, waveguides, as well as assembly technology will be reviewed. |
