Shape from shading based on a probabilistic model including surface orientation and depth fields

(in English) In this paper, we propose a new method to solve shape-from-shading problems based on a probabilistic model.
The proposed method includes both a surface orientation field and a depth field explicitly,
which makes enforcement of integrability constraint on the surface orientation field unnecessary.
In addition, the probabilistic model used in our method represents smoothing constraint
in terms not of second-order derivatives of the depth field but of
first-order derivatives of the surface orientation field,
which makes the graphical representation of the probability model containing nodes with small degrees,
thereby reducing computational complexity of the estimation via belief propagation.
We performed numerical experiment with the proposed method,
and compared the proposed method with the existing methods for shape-from-shading problem.
