A number of researchers have developed two-dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) methods for detecting solitary nodules in chest computed tomography (CT) images. 3D methods are superior to 2D methods but require lengthy processing; therefore, reduction of computation time is desired. In the present study, we investigated a high-speed 3D method for detecting solitary nodules in chest CT images, employing a cylindrical filter kernel that outputs the difference in pixel value between the maximum value of a cylindrical kernel and the center pixel. Computation time is reduced because the cylindrical kernel can be replaced by a ring kernel in an MIP image. Experiments to evaluate detection performance and computation time revealed that this proposed method is five times faster than existing 3D methods, and results in no degradation in detection performance. |
