[Invited Talk] Computer-aided Diagnosis for 2D, 3D, and Whole Breast Ultrasound

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The breast cancer is the most frequently cancer in women and it is the second rank for the death caused by cancer after cancer of lung. The earlier detection and improved treatment are effective to reduce deaths due to breast cancer. Breast ultrasound is a quite important complementary imaging modality with mammography to detect breast cancer early. In this talk, an automatic tumor detection system based on the fuzzy approach using the PC-based US system is proposed. In order to easily retrieve the US images for any regions of the breast, a clock-based storing system is proposed to store the scanned US images. Recently, the color elastographic breast images are used to diagnose the breast tumors, on which the blue region represents the harder tissues, while the green to red region represents the softer tissues. We propose an analysis method using several features for differentiating tumor malignancy of breast elastography. The malignant and benign tumors have different elasticity characteristic. Generally, the malignant tumor is harder, while the benign tumor is softer, so we make use of this characteristic to apply in our analysis method. Other than elastographic features, we also applied BI-RADS standard features to analyze the malignancy of the tumor. A computer-aided detection (CAD) system is also included to save the physicians。ヲ time for a huge volume of scanned US images. The multi-resolution technique is also applied in the CAD system for detecting tumors with different sizes. Recently, the automatic whole breast ultrasound has been developed to save the physician for screening the breast. Because a lot of images are obtained for a case, the physician still takes a lot of time to diagnosis. Hence, a computer-aided tumor detection system for the automatic whole breast ultrasound is also proposed to find suspicious regions of tumors for saving the diagnosis time.
