Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Engineering Test Satellite VIII (ETS-VIII) has been launched for various experiments on mobile satellite communications at the S band frequency, especially to support the development of a technology for transmission and reception of multimedia information for land mobile systems. This report presents a simple antenna system for land vehicle communications aimed at ETS-VIII applications. The developed antenna system which mounted into a vehicle is compact, light weight and simple satellite-tracking operation. Owing to low profile, a patch array antenna, which includes onboard-power divider and switching circuit for antenna feeding control, is applied at such system. A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver is constructed to provide accurate information on the vehicle’s position and bearing during travelling. The personal computer (PC) interfaces as the control unit and data acquisition, which specifically designed for this application, allow the switching circuit control as well as the retrieving of the received signal levels. Measured results of satellite-tracking system in anechoic chamber as well as in outdoor testing are presented. The outdoor experiment was performed at some different areas included line of sight (LOS), expressway road, and obstruction areas. Moreover, some environment circumstance effects to the received signal of the antenna included blocking, shadowing and inclination state of vehicle are discussed.
