For a statistical perspective of the global traffic flows on a large network, estimating OD (origin destination) traffic flow matrices has become of great importance especially in the recent and future network management. Since it is difficult or too costly to directly measure those matrices on very high-speed networks, statistical or information-theoretical inference approaches have been studied. In this paper, we experimentally evaluate a network-tomographic OD traffic matrix inference method, of which we previously proposed the basic idea but only showed the potential by numerical simulations. Extensive experiments using real traffic between our university networks and the Internet verify that the method infers the flow rate variances very accurately and the flow rate averages with a moderate error. The experimental results demonstrate the advantages of our method which are not well covered by the other existing approaches - the broad applicability regardless of traffic flow types, e.g. for irregular variations, even a small amount of traffic volume, both byte-count and packet-count, and various time-scales, which have potential to support a fine-grained analysis of traffic variation. A robust inference calibration is also presented fore reducing the worst case error. |
