[Encouragement Talk] Set-up and Management Schemes of Optical Paths in All-Optical Networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We propose route assignment and continuity check schemes for optical paths considering specific problems in an all-optical network. In all-optical networks, an existence of impairment limits maximum transmission distance of optical signals to satisfy QoS requirements. The degree of impairment depends on external conditions such as equipment, operation conditions and environmental conditions. It is, therefore, necessary to assign a route to each optical path considering requirement of corresponding optical signal and transmission conditions. In addition, optical paths often go through optical-cross-connects (OXC) which switch the optical signals to target direction. Because the OXC is passive node and has no electric process, continuity check is necessary before transmitting optical signals through the optical paths. If continuity check takes a long time, a whole path set-up also takes a long time, and becomes an obstacle of services requiring short-time path set-up such as an on demand service. This paper proposes (1) a route computation algorithm considering transmission conditions of optical signals, and (2) a fast optical set-up scheme operating in parallel with signaling for optical path set-up. These schemes realize (1) a whole route optimization in order to satisfy optical signal requirements and (2) speed-up of judging continuity check and preparing for alternative paths.
