Change of vital signs in low birth weight infants -- Comparison between admission time and discharge time --

(in English) The premature and the low birth weight infants carry high risk of neonatal hypoxia which is previously reported to be a cause of the episode of apnea. Therefore it is necessary for those infants to be cared in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for body temperature control, respiratory care and blood circulation management. In medical scenes, vital signs of the infants are always monitored and an alarm system is activated when those signs show an instantaneous abnormality. However interpretation of the long term changes of those sings has been largely omitted so far. Here, we recorded various kinds of vital signals such as heartbeat count, arterial blood oxygen color saturation and ventilatory frequency from the low birth weight infants hospitalized in NICU for the period starting from the admission until the discharge time. Our examination on the long term change of vital signals shows that in NICU mean heartbeat and respiration rates are decreased. These results suggest that our method could be useful in interpreting the vital signals of the infants in NICU.
