Theoretical and experimental performance of a lensed fiber employing a plano-convex microlens made of hydrated amorphous silicon is reported. The numerical simulation shows that a beam with the mode-field diameter of 10.4$\micro$m can be focused to a diameter as small as 0.56$\micro$m, about one-third of the wavelength, at the wavelength of 1.55$\micro$m. The new lensed fiber is successfully fabricated by using the rf-sputtering and chemical etching techniques. A high focusing power of the new lensed fiber, the focused spot diameter was measured to be 1.3$\micro$m, has been experimentally confirmed. |
