Numerical simulation of nonlinear pulse propagation effect on distributed strain and temperature measurement with BOTDR

(in English) This paper presents a numerical simulation on the nonlinear pulse propagation effect on the distributed strain and temperature measurement with the Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometer (BOTDR). The optical nonlinear effect in the fiber manifests as the spectral broadening and shift of the optical pulse for an input pulse peak power of more than 1W, that has an influence on the measurement with the BOTDR. However, the spectral change of the pulse does not degrade the accuracy of the measured Brillouin frequency, i.e. the strain and temperature, when the BOTDR receives both Stokes and anti-Stokes lights of Brillouin scattering. This result indicates that we can boost the input pulse power to 1 W for the measurement, thereby improving the signal to noise ratio for the Brillouin scattered light.
