It is clarified that there are two dissipation schemes in the artificial dielectrics, the polarizing current and circulating current losses. They are originated from the fact that the constituting metal particles let the current flow on them either by the electric or magnetic field. These losses are analyzed by the E/M simulator HFSS, showing increase with the effective permittivity, increase with the signal frequency and decrease with the conductivity of the metal strips. One of the most important results is the rapid decrease of losses with the decrease of metal thickness for specific direction of the magnetic field. Though the unloaded Q of the artificial dielectric resonators have not yet been improved drastically by the present study, its preliminary improvement is confirmed by the experiment of decreasing the metal thickness. |
