Character Normalization Methods using Moments of Gradient Features

(in English) Normalization is one of the most important preprocessing operations, and has a large effect on the performance of character recognition. A purpose of normalization is to regulate the size, position, and the shape of character images so as to reduce the within-class shape variation. Among various methods of normalization, moment based normalizations are reported to largely improve the performance of character recognition. However, conventional moment based normalizations can't reduce the variation of stroke length and/or thickness adequately. In order to alleviate this problem, we propose the moment normalization methods that uses the moments of character contour instead of character images itself. In the proposed methods, character contours are extracted by gradient feature extraction method.
