This paper presents the description of intersystem coexistence and cooperation mechanism for the IEEE 802.15.3c millimeter-wave (mmWave) based alternative physical (PHY) layer design for high rate wireless personal area network (WPAN). The 802.15.3c system design has specified three PHY modes to address unique market segments that are cost-sensitive and application-constrained. The PHY modes are namely the single carrier (SC) PHY, the high speed interface (HSI) PHY and the audio/visual (AV) PHY. In order to facilitate coexistence and cooperation among different PHY modes, the common mode signaling (CMS) is proposed. The CMS is a robust low data rate SC-based signaling scheme that enables interoperability and interference mitigation among PHY modes. The support for CMS is a mandatory requirement for all 802.15.3c-compliant PHY modes. CMS provides a common platform for all PHY modes to negotiate before conducting actual data communication. Besides facilitating coexistence, CMS with an extremely robust design can also be used as fallback communication mode in inferior channel conditions. In order to improve intersystem cooperation, the 802.15.3c system opened a new design flexibility supporting multiple-PHY-mode operation within the same communication network, thus increasing system efficiency. Additionally, to further enhance intersystem coexistence, the 802.15.3c system specified a common channelization plan consisting of 4 channels over the 57-66 GHz spectrum band. Each collection of devices associated to the same coordinator in a network, shall occupy a different channel to avoid co-channel interference (CCI) with other networks. A common transmit power spectral density mask is also defined to mitigate adjacent channel interference (ACI) generated by neighboring bands. |
