A Molecular system of somite segmentation in vertebrate development

(in English) Somites, which are divisions of the vertebrate body, are formed in the developmental process. They are bases of body structures such as backbone, skeletal muscles, and ribs. Vertebrate body in initial phase called embryo elongates along anterior-posterior axis because there are frequent cell divisions in unsegmented organ called presomitic mesoderm, whereas segmentations occur periodically at the anterior part of the mesoderm. Due to this periodicity of segmentation, it is thought that cells have molecular clock to regulate segmentation timing. Some genes such as Hes7 and Lfng are known as segmentation-related molecules because their expressions show oscillations with fixed period (120 min for Hes7 in mouse). Then these oscillations of gene expressions are important system for regulation of somite segmentation.
