Recent studies have shown that basic properties of auditory system can be accounted for by sparse coding or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for natural sounds. Meanwhile, Kadia and Wang have reported that harmonic relations appear in frequencies of modulatory peaks of neurons in primary auditory cortex of awake primates, using pure- and two-tone paradigm. This study shows that the complex harmonic relations emerge from a frequency-domain sparse code of highly harmonic sound, piano performance. The result implies that brain conforms, across various stages of sensory information processing, to information theoretic principle. |
