Recently, high resolution video such as HDTV becomes popular in video distribution services, and the service is expected to evolve toward higher resolution video services in the future. Video compression technology is necessary for video distribution service, and H.264 is the most effective technology among the standardized ones. The current H.264 standard employ 16x16 macroblock (MB) size, however, it is not efficient for the ultra-high resolution video due to high spatial redundancy of coded side information. In our previous work, we have proposed an approach of extending MB size for high resolution video such as 4K digital cinema in order to overcome the efficiency problem. In this study, we applied the same approach to ultra-high resolution video such as 8K. From coding experiments, it was confirmed that the bit reduction ratio in the maximum case for 8K would reach 50% approximately. |
