To promote independent mobility of blind persons, we are developing a system which enables them to produce tactile maps of arbitrary locations in Japan. The system is a Web application with accessibility in mind so that blind persons can use it. The user assigns a target location by text input. Then, the system searches for geographical data around the target from the map database, selects necessary data for tactile maps, renders a map image, and lays out the image along with braille legends, the directional symbol, and the scale around it. The user prints the whole image onto a sheet of capsule paper by using an ordinary printer and put the print into the “heater.” The heater makes the black ink printed lines and symbols expand so that users can feel them with their fingers. We held a workshop at which several blind persons experienced the operation of the system and explored the tactile maps they made. The attendees’ opinions were gathered to improve the system. |
