Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Attentional capture and inhibition of return (IOR) have been shown in the spatial cueing method. It has been broadly accepted that IOR is driven by or follows attentional capture, while there are some studies indicating that two different mechanisms underlie these phenomena. In this study, an array of ten boxes was used instead of traditional two boxes for possible target sites in the spatial cueing method. This manipulation made cue validity decrease from 50% to 10%, so that top-down mechanism such as attentional control setting would eliminate working of attentional capture. In the experiment, clear IOR was found even for the SOA of 150 ms, rather than facilitation that is usually found for this short SOA. The results indicated that attentional capture and IOR were controlled by two different mechanisms.
