Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Directions of gazes and gestures play important roles in multiparty conversations. However, existing video-mediated communication systems which do not support mutual gaze may interfere in conversations because gazes and gestures direct toward wrong ways. In this paper gesture behaviors expressed in video-mediated conversations are analyzed to compare several gaze support system conditions including human-to-human conversation condition. The results shows that the number of hand gestures of the two system which do not support mutual gaze halves compare to the conversation in human-to-human and gaze support system conditions, especially, the number of beat (baton) gestures that can be a measure of activity of conversations deceases remarkably. It also suggests the hand gestures are needed to be conveyed in video-mediated communications.
