Four-year rain attenuation statistics are obtained for both up and down links of Ku-band Superbird C, which connects the earth stations in Equatorial Atmosphere Radar (EAR) in West Sumatra, Indonesia and Research Institute of Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) of Kyoto University in Uji, Kyoto. Their long-term statistics agree well with the ITU-R predictions, although the high attenuation range in Indonesia shows much less time percentages due to localized structure of convective clouds. Worst month cumulative time percentages compared to the yearly average statistics show larger values and variations in Japan than Indonesia, indicating that their seasonal and year-to-year variations are larger in the temperate region than the equatorial region. The attenuation ratio of up to down links, however, seems to have considerable year-to-year variability in Indonesia as well as in Japan. In Indonesia, on the other hand, heavy rainfall is concentrated in the afternoon, yielding a very large daily variation of the attenuation statistics. Also, worst hour statistics calculated on hourly basis show much larger difference from the yearly average statistics than the worst month statistics. |
