Efficient File System with Forgetting Mechanism
Akira Iwamoto, Takumi Miyoshi (Shibaura Inst. of Tech.) NS2009-8
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) a society of highly advanced information technologies, users have many opportunities to handle many kinds of large data. If they have too many files beyond their management ability, the number of files will just increase since they hardly decide whether to delete or not individually. That causes wasteful uses of storage devices. Shared storage systems also have the same problem since the users cannot delete the files saved by others. This paper proposes a novel file system to automatically reduce the amount of saved data. The mechanism is partly an imitation of human forgetting mechanism. We also implement a simple version of the proposed file system and evaluate its usage characteristics.
