Performance Analysis of 10 Gigabit Class PON Systems with Power-Saving Functions

(in English) Power saving of network systems is becoming a major issue from the viewpoint of preventing global warming and reducing the operational expenditure (OPEX). In addition, the standardization of the 10 Gigabit class passive optical networks (PONs) which are the next generation access technologies is currently discussed in IEEE 802.3av and FSAN/ITU-T. There are concerns about the increase of power consumption caused by emerging high-speed PONs, and therefore power saving of the PON systems has been discussed actively in recent years. This report firstly describes a power-saving function using sleep and periodical wake-up operation of optical network units (ONUs), which are located at user premises, to reduce power consumption in the PON systems in the absence of traffic. Then, IEEE 802.3av 10G-EPON (10 Gigabit Ethernet PON) and FSAN/ITU-T 10G-PON (10 Gigabit capable PON) are taken as examples of the next generation 10 Gigabit class PON systems, and the implementation of the power-saving function is described. The power-saving performance of the 10 Gigabit class PON systems with the power-saving function and its impact on QoS are confirmed by performing numerical simulations.
