In the speech-related field, vocal-tract models are confirmed to be effective tools for education in acoustics. Arai’s cylinder-type vocal-tract models are based on Chiba and Kajiyama’s measurement of vocal-tract shapes. One of their characteristics is that the models are effective for quickly demonstrating vowel production since their shapes are fixed for each vowel. The vocal-tract shapes are able to be simplified and yet the qualities of vowels can remain the same. In this study, we developed vocal-tract models with simplified vocal-tract shapes as educational tools to teach the essence what in vocal-tract shape produces the difference among different vowels. As a result, the five Japanese vowels were achieved by “tube-connected models,” where several uniform tubes with different cross-sectional areas and lengths were connected as Fant’s three-tube models and Arai’s sliding three-tube model. |
