[Encouragement Talk] Per-Flow Fairness and Throughput Improvement in Multi-Hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
Pham Thanh Giang, Kenji Nakagawa (Nagaoka Univ. of Tech.) NS2009-13
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless \textit{Local Area Networks} (LANs) is the \textit{de facto} standard for wireless ad hoc networks, but it does not perform well in terms of throughput and fairness. Many papers have been published in these areas. However, fairness and throughput performances are two contradictory objectives especially in multi-hop wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a new scheme aiming to solve per-flow fairness problem in IEEE 802.11 multi-hop ad hoc network. Along with fairness performance, our proposed scheme also achieves good throughput performance. Our proposed scheme includes two parts. In the link layer, we control each flow to ensure they achieve per-flow fair throughput and also share fair bandwidth for forwarding flows. In the MAC layer, each station tries to evaluate network condition by itself then adjust frequency to access channel to improve network utilization and also ensure per-node fairness. Performance of our proposed scheme is examined on various multi-hop network topologies by using Network Simulator (NS-2).
