Uncertainty of Discharge Current Waveform for Contact Discharge of ESD-Gun onto Ground

(in English) International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) prescribes the immunity test (IEC61000-4-2) of electronic equipment against electrostatic discharges (ESDs), and specifies the detailed waveform of a discharge current injected by an ESD gun onto an IEC recommended calibration target. Based on the IEC recommendation, however, contact discharges onto actual electronic equipment under test (EUT) cannot always be performed. In the present study, using the IEC calibration target in lieu of the metallic enclosure of EUT, we measured discharge currents for contact discharges from an ESD-gun with respect different arrangements of an ESD-gun and test voltages. As a result, we found that these current rise time and current amplitudes at 30 ns and 60 ns satisfy IEC requirements, while some of discharge arrangements allow the current peak to exceed the IEC specified values by 20 %.
