Prioritization Control using CTS in Wireless LANs

(in English) IEEE 802.11e in which four classes are defined for prioritization was standardized as a QoS control scheme in a wireless LAN.
It is, however, difficult to control "uplink" throughput of each class arbitrarily.
Moreover, deployment cost is high because all terminals have to be modified in compliance with IEEE 802.11e specifications as well as the access point.
A scheme called ROC (MAC Frame Receiving Opportunity Control) enabling a more fine-grained prioritization than IEEE 802.11e was proposed.
ROC is implemented merely by modifyingthe access point.
This report proposes a novel priority control scheme in which CTS (Clear-To-Send) is employed for giving more transmission opportunities to high-priority flow than low-priority flows.
This scheme considerably achieves much higher utilizations than ROC, can be deployed merely by modifying the access point, and can control throughput almost arbitrarily.
The proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation, result of which shows the advantage and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
