To realize optical frequency standard with trapped ions, it is necessary to confine the ions into the Lamb-Dicke regime. We fabricate a miniature rf ion trap to confine ions in the Lamb-Dicke regime. A RF driving voltage is applied to the trap using a helical resonator to enhance the voltage and to eliminate noises. $^{171}$Yb$^+$ is suitable for frequency standard because it is insensitive to magnetic field. We succeeded in laser cooling of $^{171}$Yb$^+$ by eliminating optical pumping due to hyperfine structures. |
