Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recentry, it has become possible to mesure human brain functions by using noninvasive methods.
Among these methods, functional MRI (fMRI) which is based on blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) contrast has been used most widely.
In recent years, however, it has been reported that it is possible to mesure the brain functions by diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI)
in which visualizes diffusing water molecules in minute stractures such as neurons.
This approach is based on the fact that neuronal cells in the brain swells when the neural activation occures.
Its spatial and temporal resolutions are superior to those of fMRI with BOLD contrast.
In the present study, with the Monte-Calro method we simulated the motions of water molecules in the restricted stractures whose sizes were similar to
those of neurons to find appropriate imaging parametrs for DW-MRI.
Simulation results demonstrated that imaging parameters and the size of restricted area may change signal intensities.
Furthermore, it was found that the difference of signal intensities due to the change in the size of restricted areas largely depends on the q-value
which is the one of imaging parameters.
These results indicate that we can estimate the imaging parameters which maximize the difference of signal intensities
in DWI between before and after cell swelling by this simulation.
