The possibility of facial expression perception from haptic motion.

(in English) We investigated the possibility of communicating facial expression perception by finger. The previous studies showed that subjects can recognize the facial expressions of real human face model by their hands. In this study, more simple stimuli were used. In vision, we can perceive facial expressions from a small number of motion vectors. When we presented the 4x4 dots face on subjects’ finger, they reported the difficulty to perceive a face. However, it was indicated that half of them can perceive as a mouth if it was instructed. The experiments showed that we could discriminate the direction of dots motion. On these results, we discuss the possibility that we can discriminate the facial expressions by finger using association with vision or verbal instruction.
