A study on Non-parametric Estimation of Software Reliability
Shintaro Mizoguchi, Tadashi Dohi (Hiroshima Univ.) R2009-21
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In past a huge number of parametric software reliability models have been developed with
the aim of quantitative estimation of software reliability. Since the parametric models
are based on scenarios on fault-detection process in software testing phase, it is difficult
to validate the physical meaning of scenarios themselves assumed in parametric modeling.
Hence, we need to identify the best model from the various points of view by taking account of
parameter estimation, statistical test and model selection. In this article, we improve a
non-parametric order statistics-based software reliability model by Barghout, Littlewood and
Abdel-Ghaly (1998), from the stand points of estimation algorithm and reliability measure.
More specifically, we introduce the kernel density method with a trucated kernel function
and try to estimate the software fault-detection time distribution with higher accuracy. Also,
we use the mean value of the fault-detection time instead of its median and predict the
fault-detection time sequentially. In the validation test with real data, it can be investigated
how the improvement influences the quantitative software reliability assessment.
