Long Way to PLZT Thin Film Optical Waveguide Technology

A research project on growth of thin film LiNbO3 was initiated in 1989. Then, the project shifted to PLZT thin film waveguide technology. It has not been an easy project and it needed quite long time to realize PLZT products since it started as materials research and moved onto device research and device development. The efforts created high-speed PLZT optical switches with less than 10 ns response time essential for burst and packet switching networks. The PLZT waveguide has an advantage in polarization insensitivity in addition to its high-speed switching and low-power consumption. Recently, previous insertion loss issue has been significantly improved by a newly developed buried waveguide structure. PLZT based AWG devices and Er-PLZT amplifiers have been prototyped towards integrated PLZT photonic circuits. |
